AI prompting mistakes that waste your best models
Common AI prompting mistakes — buried asks, mixed goals, missing output shape — and how to fix them before you hit send.
By oblivioX
People blame the model when the prompt did the damage. These AI prompting mistakes show up across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
1. The ask is at the end
Three sentences of wind-up, then “can you help?” Lead with the verb.
2. Conflicting goals in one send
“Be brief and exhaustive.” Split the job or rank priorities.
3. No output shape
Without length/format, models default to essay mode. Say “table,” “bullets,” or “code only.”
4. Context that doesn’t change the answer
Biography is not context. Constraints and audience are.
5. Skipping the rewrite
The cheapest upgrade is editing the input once. That is what a prompt improvement tool is for — see also the guide.
